Vaccination and Booster Information
COVID-19 vaccines continue to provide strong protection against severe disease, hospitalization and death. But it is common for protection from vaccines to decrease over time. A booster dose helps “boost” the existing protection a person already has against a disease. There are now booster dose recommendations for all three available COVID-19 vaccines.
LLCHD is currently providing booster doses to anyone who falls within the current CDC recommendations and is offering Pfizer and Moderna booster doses at some clinics. Types of booster doses being offered are noted on the clinic schedule. LLCHD is contacting eligible Pfizer, Moderna and J&J vaccine recipients to schedule booster dose appointments.
Pfizer and Moderna Booster Recommendation
Pfizer and Moderna booster doses are currently approved for the following groups at six months after their second dose:
- People 65 and older and residents in long-term care facilities
- People ages 18 to 64 with underlying medical conditions that put them at high risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19
- People who work or live in settings where they have increased exposure to COVID-19
Johnson and Johnson (J&J) Booster Recommendation
Booster doses are also now recommended for everyone who was vaccinated with J&J vaccine two or more months ago. J&J boosters are being offered at several local pharmacies.
Recommendations also allow people to choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose. Some people may prefer to get the same type of vaccine that they originally received and others may prefer to get a different booster.
